What is Right

34

There are lots of phrases and soundbites thrown around these days by politicians. They promise all sorts of wonderful things, or declare their intention to save the planet or protect us from the things we fear or give us what we want.

So often, the promises they make sound good on the surface (and especiallly good to the uninformed), but if you look past their words and discern their true intentions, you will often find they are promising what they cannot give, or even worse, using slight of hand by promising to give when they will actually take.

How do you know what to listen and look for? How can know when something promised is the opposite of what our founders intended? How do you know your freedoms are being threatened if you don't really know what those freedoms are???

How do you know what is RIGHT?

Did you know that RIGHT is not a relative term? If you believe that God created the world and ordained it, then you probably believe that His word is true and . . . well, RIGHT. And America's founders also believed God's word. They knew that we need God if our nation is going to run smoothly.

"Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other."
President John Adams

"It is impossible to rightly govern a nation without God and the Bible." -— President George Washington

And, despite the shortcomings of man, this whole free-country-thing has worked out pretty well!

Okay, back to what is right. As a Christian, I have found that when I'm reading the Bible daily, I am very sensitive to what lines up with God's word in my daily life. It can be a discussion, something I'm reading, or even a decision-making process. If I have God's word daily in my head and my heart, I'm much more able to live by it.

It works the same was as an American citizen. If I have read the Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, and the writings of the founders, I'm much more likely to know what is right for America.

"Knowledge is power." - Francis Bacon

"Knowledge will forever govern ignorance; and a people who mean to be their own governors must arm themselves with the power which knowledge gives. "
-James Madison

If I hear some soundbite, or read an article, or hear of a bill being introduced in congress, I can easily discern if it lines up with the intentions of the founders of this great nation.

The point here is to be able to think for ourselves, not just believe what a journalist or politician tells us is good, or right, for America. Just last week I heard Rush Limbaugh state that "even the ignorant can make a difference." Unfortunately, it's so true.

So, do you know what is right? Do you know how to find out? All you need to do is arm yourself with some basic knowledge of why our country was founded the way it was. Then, you'll be able to help preserve what we have.

This will come in real handy when Election Day rolls around.

Thankfully, we live in an age when just about anything can be found for free online. So start here:

The founding documents (Declaration of Independence, Constitution, Bill of Rights)

Common Sense by Thomas Paine

The Crisis by Thomas Paine (this one gives me chills when I read it!)

"In the absence of biblical convictions you will go the way of culture and society." -Sally Clarkson
